PC frustrations

Posted in General on November 29th, 2008 by Ryan

And another one is dead. My old PC finally died. So that makes 2 dead motherboards. Not sure what to do. I’ve searched for replacement boards for the old P4 PC and can’t find any that will support everything that is currently in the build now like the AGP video card. All the boards now have PCI-e. I’ve decided to scrap the parts and hope that my parents will find a new PC.

As for my desktop’s motherboard…Gigabyte voided my warrenty due to physical damage on a corner of the board. I should have sent it back when I first received it but I wonder if they would have voided my warrenty then too! Its obvious that the damage is a manufacturing defect. The board has a curved corner and anything other than the creation of the board would cause too much stress at that corner and would snap off. No way I, or FedEx could cause something like it.

Defining Moments

Posted in General on November 13th, 2008 by Ryan

I’ve had some feedback on my GUP idea and its been received well by others. I’ve spent some more time tonight adding some thoughts and moving around ideas already on the map. I’m faced with a challenge though on how to actually brainstorm ON the map itself. Right now its just bits and pieces of thoughts and views on the world through me. I started to put questions under “Uncategorized” and listed possible answers to the questions. Eventually, each answer will be linked to an idea already on the map and the question will be absorbed into the map by these connections. For now, its either black or white in where I place something. One obvious, but crucial, connection is that of “Constant search for purpose” from [Mind->Psychology->Science] to “Religion”. Possibly the defining link in my thought process. Everything else is just fallout between this link.

Never let me down, gently. Never let me go! No, no…

The reality of the layoffs is too much to handle now that it has had time to sink in. Of course, its not exactly the end of the world but when you just got yourself into a nice stride and something comes along to bump you out of step, its definately unwelcomed. Even if my job is safe, other programs could be at risk for “trimming”. My education is paid for by work. Reimbursed 100%. At this moment, I’m told that the tuition reimbursement program is “safe” and there are no plans currently to reduce any percentage of what the company will pay.

Rockwell Collins cuts 300 jobs, moves to cut costs

Posted in General on November 11th, 2008 by Ryan

Taken from CNN Money

Its public now that Rockwell Collins is cutting jobs and tightening up their programs to save money due to the economic stress on the company. Out of the 300 jobs to be cut, an estimated 30-40 will come from Melbourne operations. I’m not too worried right now in hopes that some new contracts within my division will pick up production for us and I will have some job security.
