It has been one hell of a week/weekend. All I can say is that I can’t wait until my Winter vacation from work to see my family.

Layoffs

Posted in General on August 17th, 2009 by Ryan

I received a text today from someone on 1st shift at work informing me that the layoffs have started. I don’t know where people where getting this number of 200 people being let go from. Actually, the total is about 47 with both shifts combined. I already had some panic attacks after class today while trying to think about what to do if anything should happen to either of us.

Future state

I’ve been thinking about some ideas for my site/blog recently. With the layoffs at work coming up, I might look into offering a PC repair service for a fee (finally). I’d use either this domain or another one that I purchased as the portal. Another idea was to use one of the domains as my personal website, with my blog/twitter, social networking links, PC support, and whatever else I can think of. I just don’t know which content management system will be the best. Also, I’ve been using twitter more often then my blog and I’m not sure what to do. I know a lot of people use twitter for “micro-blogging” in between their actual blogs, but mine would just be am accumulation of the tweets.

Rough week

Posted in General on July 30th, 2009 by Ryan

I’ve been off from work for the majority of this week due to some issue that came up Sunday. My abdomen was killing me and I left work early Monday and Wednesday. I went to the hospital after I picked Jenn up from work on Monday. I guess I need to change my diet since the on-call doctor looked at my x-ray and said I was “completely full”. I was forced to take Tuesday off after they gave me a bottle of magnesium citrate. Oi.

I think I’m ready for this Fall semester of school and have signed up for two classes this time. It’s getting down to the final classes and I’m almost done with my associates. Next I need to focus on my major. I’ve been looking more into a Computer Science / Software Engineering degree from FIT. I have to set some time aside next week to speak to an admissions counselor. What I really need to do is look into switching my general AA into a AS in Computer Programming although I’ve finished a majority of this AA.

Rant Wrap-up

Posted in General on June 4th, 2009 by Ryan

We’re finally in our new apartment. If I were to move again I’m definitely dishing out a few bucks and having someone move my crap for me. Its such a pain in the ass to sort things before and after a move. Although, its a good time to purge a lot of things that you’d most likely never use. We spent 3 days moving and by Friday we were too tired to celebrate our anniversary on Saturday. So I’m looking forward to this weekend since we’re going furniture shopping and hopefully getting the dim sum I’ve been craving from last weekend.

I’ve also been back to work for a week. We had a long “vacation” for the Memorial Day week. These coming weeks are going to be interesting. Our schedule is getting behind and our production is going up. There’s a bottleneck forming on my step for test. My area had a meeting before the break to go over our current state and future state. I’m hoping the results of that meeting will improve our flow and we won’t be rushed as much to get things out.

I’ve been thinking about finishing my card game. Its still has a few more sections that need to be worked on. The AI is non-existent along with the winning conditions for each player. I need to stick with it to keep my mind in the programming world for work. There’s been a little less pressure to finish my database while we wait for permissions to connect to the master parts database. Once we have that connection I believe things will go smoothly from there. One other thing I need to look into is converting the code from VB6 to VB2008. I’m so used to the VB6 environment and code, and haven’t programmed since VB6. There was too much time in between VB6 and 2008 so a straight upgrade breaks too much of the code. I’m hoping that a jump to 2005 from VB6 then to 2008 will ease the transition.
